The Challenge

The cable-operated dredger PRINS 6 is used in hydraulic engineering operations, where the crane accounts for a significant share of energy consumption alongside the main drive.

The vessel required a retrofit solution that could support daily distances, high peak loads during crane operation and limited onboard installation space.

The Solution

TESVOLT OCEAN installed the Kaptein Compass Core battery system, developed for demanding maritime applications and retrofit projects with limited installation space.

Charging is supported by an onshore hydrogen fuel cell generator, enabling overnight charging and a full working day of operation.

The Heart of the System: Kaptein Compass Core

Kaptein Compass Core Battery System

Installed battery system on board PRINS 6

  • Total capacity: ~1.9–2.0 MWh
  • Configuration: 16 strings
  • Air-cooled system
  • Compact retrofit footprint
  • Hydrogen-supported charging
  • 8–10 hour runtime

The Results

  • Fully electric operation — zero emissions
  • Full-day operation without intermediate recharging
  • Reliable performance under high peak loads
  • Compact retrofit installation
  • Off-grid charging with hydrogen support

We needed batteries that can charge large amounts of energy in a short time while taking up as little space as possible on board.

Crane operations generate high load peaks — so it was essential that the battery system is robust and performs reliably even under those conditions.
