Lübeck, 10.9.2024 - The newly founded joint venture TESVOLT OCEAN presented a new battery system at the SMM trade fair in Hamburg, which will enable significantly more ships in the maritime and inland shipping industry to be equipped with clean e-drives for the first time. This is because the battery modules can be installed individually and at any angle of inclination wherever there is space for them in the ship. The vibration-resistant storage modules can also be installed on the floor and then accessed. Until now, there has often not been enough space in ships for battery storage systems with sufficient capacity. Thanks to its disruptive technology, the new “Kaptein Series” power storage system is characterized by further unique selling points - from the lightest weight to the highest energy density to the fastest charging capability. TESVOLT OCEAN also offers everything from a single source: from project planning, installation and services to the return of the battery modules. This also makes clean e-drives for shipping much more convenient and cost-efficient.
Longest range and fastest charging
"We are entering the market with a best-in-class storage system. It offers a technological solution to the biggest pain points of ship owners, system integrators and shipyards," explains Kent Thoresen, CTO of TESVOLT OCEAN. "For example, the range of ships with electric propulsion is still a problem for many owners. In the often cramped ship spaces, not enough battery modules can be accommodated to achieve the desired range. At 246 Wh per liter, our new Kaptein battery system has the highest energy density on the market to date, meaning it takes up very little space despite its high capacity."
The charging times of commercially available batteries are also too long for many boat owners. In fact, most batteries approved for shipping do not even have a continuous C-rate of 2 C. At 4 C, the “Kaptein” storage system offers the highest continuous C rate available in the maritime industry to date. This means significantly shorter charging times for ship owners.
Light, safe and individually installable
The new storage system also scores highly in terms of weight: at just 4.83 kg per kWh of storage capacity, it will be the lightest battery system for shipping on the market, whereas conventional batteries weigh at least 7 kg per kWh. A unique fire suppression system will ensure maximum safety.
"We spent three years talking intensively with customers in six focus groups about what they need. That's why Kaptein fits the need so well, it solves real problems in e-propulsion for ships," says Kilian Hoffmann, CCO at TESVOLT OCEAN. “We are already receiving a huge number of inquiries about the new battery system.”
Support right from the start
"Every customer has different goals. That's why we always tailor our energy storage system precisely to the individual customer; Kaptein is not an off-the-shelf product. Thanks to the special cell-to-module design, Kaptein is nevertheless particularly cost-efficient compared to the market," reports Øystein Kjæreng, CEO of TESVOLT OCEAN. "We offer everything from a single source, from planning, installation and commissioning to monitoring, maintenance and recycling. With our offering, we want to make a significant contribution to accelerating the deployment of clean e-drives in shipping - as conveniently and cost-effectively as possible."
